We’re getting psyched for the summer Olympics a little early and checking out activities that will have you breaking a sweat. Let these four fitness-focuses events in Lake Tahoe, British Virgin Islands, Steamboat Springs, and Austria inspire your next trip.

America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride

Strap on your helmet and head for the hills. This annual race has hardcore cyclists circling Lake Tahoe through two states and as high as 7100 feet. But anyone can appreciate the scenery. All skill levels can enjoy a half-race and sightseeing boat tour.

Prefer two feet to two wheels? Get caught up in the excitement at Lake Tahoe Horizon Casino Resort, where the race starts and you can easily kill a couple hours waiting for them to finish.

Wreck Week

May 27 – June 1, 2012 | Virgin Gorda, BVI

Any time is a good time to explore beneath the surface of the turquoise waters that surround BVI. But during Wreck Week you can surround yourself with like-minded diving enthusiasts in search of rusting wrecks and aquatic adventure.

A dozen dives over 6 days let you explore a sunken airplane, the RSS Rhone (famously featured in the 1977 film The Deep), and more tropical fish than you could have imagined.

31st Annual Steamboat Marathon

Tighten your laces and make your way to the starting line at this mountainside marathon. Curving around the thundering Elk River, down country roads and past snow-capped Rockies, it’s a stunningly scenic race that brings runners from across the country. But even with all the visitors, it keeps up the small-town vibe.

Not a runner? Not to worry! Cheer on racers from the sidelines and catch the scenery yourself (at a more laid-back pace) in the days following the run.

Golden Roof Challenge

June 1, 2012 | Innsbruck, Austria

The goal is typically to win the gold, not to compete in front of it. But every year in Innsbruck, competitors pole vault and long jump in the shadow of this famous building. Watching athletes on the portable track is always thrilling, but this years’ competition ups the ante: it’s also a qualifier for the 2012 Olympics in London.
