In Rio, Carnival isn’t just another festival. After all, this is the Carnival Capital of the World. But what’s the big deal, anyway?
We’ve got some Carnival Q&A to get you in the know about this infamous festival.
What’s all the fuss about?
Carnival’s been big in Brazil since 1850, when the Portuguese brought their annual celebration of spring to this coastal city. The festival evolved into a celebration of freedom: men dressed as women, the poor dressed as royals, and slaves walked free. Influenced by African and Amerindian cultures, elaborate costumes and Samba dancing have become synonymous with Carnival. Kicked up by competition, the spectacle has become bigger and better every year.
What exactly do I do at Carnival?
The big event is the Samba Parade. Every night, different samba groups – called ‘schools’ – strut their stuff down the Sambodromo, a custom-built venue that hosts the parade. You can pick up tickets to watch or, if you’re feeling adventurous, sign up to march with a school.
When the sun sets, you can dress to the nines for one of the nightly balls. Go glam at the infamous Magic Ball at Copacabana Palace Hotel or down free beer at the new Long Live the Beer! Ball. Or simply head towards crowds gathering for street parties throughout the city.
Where can I learn to dance like that?
Head out to a samba school in Rio to pick up some moves and get a feel for the locals. In the months running up to the festival, schools will practice their pick for the parade, but anyone is welcome to dance. Hit up hot spots like Mangueira, where tourists are typical and security is on hand. Be cautious of visiting schools outside the city limits and, like many places, avoid wearing flashy jewelry and electronics.
What’s with the costumes?
Every Samba school has its own attire and when Carnival rolls around, buying a costume is your ticket to dancing with the troop. But just about everyone dresses up for the party, so don’t think you need to be in the parade to get into it! Go ahead: don an ornate mask, toss on a feather boa, slap on some body glitter. If there’s ever a time to cut loose, it’s Carnival.
I’m sold! When’s the party?
As luck would have it, Carnival 2012 lines up with President’s Weekend from Feb 17-21. This makes it the perfect time to swap hum-drum winter with an out-of-this-world street party.
Where should I stay?
